I held a human brain in my hands today!

November 14th, 2008 (04:34 pm)

One of the linguistics professors has a contact at the university hospital, so she took her students (and 3 former students, one of them me) there today to look at real human brains. Within the first 5 minutes, Laila almost fainted and had to leave, but the rest of us managed to not faint. Although, I did feel myself getting a little bit pale, and my hands were white. The smell was pretty gross too.

It was very interesting! He went over the brain in detail, and he also had a sliced-up brain so we could see the inside of it. He talked about lateralization of language and brain damages and aphasia, and we asked all sorts of questions. Very cool.

At the end, some med students came in, fetched some legs (!!!) from a box thingy and started dissecting them. We went over to have a look, and me and Anders were weirded out by the toenails. Then we opened another box to peek inside, which turned out to contain...human arms.

Then I had lunch.

Oh and P.S. brains are heavy!
